Joy-Anna Duggar in Tears After Hair Makeover Mishap: ‘You Only Live Once’

by Barbara

Joy-Anna Duggar will not be launching an at-home hair studio anytime soon.

On October 22, Duggar, 27, shared a video on Instagram featuring her friend Gabrielle Patton coloring her hair in the sink. “I can’t believe we’re doing this. We’re going all in. Do the roots first,” Duggar said, as Patton reassured her that Duggar is “beautiful no matter what hair color” she has and that they could “fix it” if needed.

As Patton worked on sectioning Duggar’s thick hair, she expressed gratitude for bringing two dye packets. Duggar acknowledged her mixed feelings about the outcome: “I’m probably going to regret it, then I’m going to love it, or I’ll hate it and go get it fixed. You only live once, right? I’ve wanted to do this for a while.”

After setting a timer for 20 minutes, they rinsed out the dye, revealing a color much darker than Duggar expected. “It’s dark,” she exclaimed, while Patton reassured her that it would lighten with subsequent washes.

Duggar humorously captioned the Instagram video: “‘You only live once’ & ‘girls just want to have fun’ were behind this decision, and then I quickly realized this was a stupid decision, LOL.”

In their 2014 book Growing Up Duggar, Joy-Anna and her siblings shared that their family’s conservative religious beliefs restricted them from cutting or dyeing their hair. The book states, “Our hairstyle is our choice, and we choose longer hair based on our understanding of 1 Corinthians 11:4-15.” It emphasizes that while it is considered shameful for men to have long hair, a woman’s hair is her glory.

Joy-Anna, the daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, grew up in a family that has 19 children and follows the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) religion. The Duggars starred in the TLC show 19 Kids and Counting from 2009 to 2015.

Since marrying Austin Forsyth in May 2017, Joy-Anna has distanced herself from the IBLP church. In a September 2023 YouTube video, she shared, “We always talked about how we wouldn’t use their literature. We’ve just distanced ourselves.” She emphasized that they now choose to follow Jesus independently. Joy-Anna and Austin are parents to son Gideon, born in 2018; daughter Evelyn, born in 2020; and son Gunner, born in 2023.
