What you eat is crucial for achieving healthier, shinier hair, experts say. Dr. Hamdan Abdullah Hamed, a board-certified dermatologist and trichologist, emphasized the importance of nutrition during a recent interview with GB News. He highlighted the benefits of consuming high-protein foods and specific vitamins and minerals for strengthening hair.
Dr. Hamed explained that diet significantly impacts hair health. “Many people ask me how to make their hair healthier and thicker while also promoting growth,” he noted. “Healthy hair goes beyond appearance; it reflects overall health.”
Several factors affect the condition of your hair, including diet, stress levels, and hair care practices. To improve hair health, Dr. Hamed suggests focusing on your daily food intake. He stressed the need for adequate protein, stating, “Hair is primarily made of keratin. Consuming enough protein from sources like chicken, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts can strengthen your hair.”
In addition to protein, Dr. Hamed listed five essential vitamins to include in your diet for optimal hair growth and strength:
Vitamin A: Supports the scalp in producing sebum, which keeps hair moisturized.
B Vitamins (especially Biotin): Vital for energy production and hair growth.
Vitamin C: Aids in collagen production, which strengthens hair.
Vitamin D: Linked to hair growth; insufficient levels may lead to hair loss.
Iron: Essential for oxygen transport in the blood; low iron levels can contribute to thinning hair.
Zinc: Supports hair repair and growth.
These vitamins and minerals can be found in various fruits and vegetables. While supplements can help increase vitamin intake, Dr. Hamed advises consulting a medical professional before adding them to your routine, especially if you are unsure about your current vitamin levels.
Another expert offered tips for enhancing hair health during showering. They recommend using gentle, natural shampoos and massaging the scalp to promote growth and improve hair quality.
