Scrunching
Apply a Curl-Enhancing Product
Before scrunching, apply a curl-enhancing product such as a mousse, gel, or a curl cream. These products help to define the curls, add hold, and reduce frizz. Choose a product that is suitable for your hair type and the level of hold you desire. For example, if you have fine curly hair, you may want to use a lighter mousse or a cream to avoid weighing down the curls. If you have thick, coarse curls, a stronger-hold gel may be more appropriate.
Scrunching Technique
Gently squeeze the product into your hands and then start scrunching your curls from the bottom up. Use your hands to cup the curls and squeeze them gently towards the roots. This motion helps to distribute the product evenly and enhance the curl shape. You can repeat this scrunching motion several times throughout the hair. Be careful not to rub the hair as this can cause frizz.
Drying
After scrunching, you can let your hair air dry naturally if you have time. This is the best option as it helps to preserve the curl shape and reduces heat damage. If you’re in a hurry, you can use a diffuser attachment on a low heat setting with a hairdryer. Hold the diffuser close to the curls and move it around gently to dry the hair evenly. The diffuser helps to distribute the air flow and prevent the curls from getting blown out of shape.
Twisting and Pinning
Section the Hair
Divide your hair into small sections. You can start from the front or the back, depending on your preference. The size of the sections will depend on the length and thickness of your hair as well as the level of definition you want. For more defined curls, smaller sections may be better.
Twisting the Sections
Take each section of hair and twist it loosely. You can twist it in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. The twist should not be too tight as it can cause the curl to become too defined and look unnatural. The goal is to create a bit of texture and separation in the curls.
Pinning
Once you’ve twisted the section, pin it to the top of your head using a bobby pin or a small clip. Repeat this process with all the sections of hair. Leave the pinned sections in place for a few minutes. This allows the curls to set in the twisted position and gives them some extra lift and volume.
Unpinning and Styling
After a few minutes, gently unpin the sections. Use your fingers to gently separate and fluff up the curls. You can also add a small amount of a lightweight hair oil or serum to add shine and smooth any flyaways. This technique is great for adding volume and creating a more textured look to your curly hair.
Braiding for Definition
Braiding Small Sections
Take small sections of hair and braid them. You can do simple three-strand braids or more intricate braids depending on your skill level and the time you have. The braids should be loose enough so that they don’t pull too tightly on the hair but tight enough to create some definition.
Sleep with Braids (Optional)
If you have time the night before, you can braid your hair before going to bed. This will give you more defined curls in the morning. When you wake up, simply undo the braids and gently separate the curls with your fingers. If you’re doing the braids in the morning, leave them in for at least 15 – 20 minutes before unbraiding.
Finishing Touches
After unbraiding, you can apply a curl-defining spray or a light-hold hairspray to help set the curls and keep them in place. You can also use a small amount of a styling wax or pomade on the ends of the curls to add some definition and prevent frizz.
