Angelina Jolie showcased her signature elegance at the premiere of her film Maria on Saturday, October 26, during the AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles. The 49-year-old actress looked regal in a long, nude silk gown paired with a lightweight black shawl-style jacket.
However, it was her hairstyle that truly surprised fans. While Jolie has often appeared on the red carpet with straight hair or chic updos, she opted for voluminous beachy curls this time, styled with a side part. This look marked a departure from her typical red carpet style. Earlier in September, she was seen in CR Fashion Book with curls, but this more casual style was a refreshing change.
Jolie enhanced her appearance with drop earrings, bold red lipstick, and subtle eye makeup, which included a hint of eyeshadow and black eyeliner. She also matched her bright red manicure to her lips, creating a striking ensemble.
In Maria, directed by Pablo Larraín, Jolie portrays the famous opera singer Maria Callas. The film follows Callas, an American-Greek soprano, as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous public life. It depicts her final days as she grapples with her identity and legacy.
Callas, renowned for her exceptional three-octave vocal range, passed away in Paris in 1977 at the age of 53 from a heart attack. To prepare for her role, Jolie underwent months of training.
On the red carpet, Jolie spoke to PEOPLE about her connection to Callas. She shared, “I know there are certain things that people would assume we have in common, but I think we share a certain loneliness in doing our work. Sometimes we find ourselves alone at night, trying to figure things out.” She added, “I may be many things, but I’m a very hard worker. I think we both see ourselves as performers dedicated to our work, often being very hard on ourselves.”
Earlier this year, Maria received a standing ovation at the New York Film Festival. At that event, Jolie was accompanied by three of her children: Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, and Maddox, 23. She wore a stunning white vintage Madame Grès gown from Mon Vintage in Paris.
Jolie also made headlines at the Toronto Film Festival, where she premiered her directorial film Without Blood. At that event, she dazzled in a black silk Dolce & Gabbana gown with ruching details and wore elbow-length silk gloves. Her long blonde hair was styled in a middle part, and she chose not to wear any jewelry.
Pax, who worked as an assistant director on the film, joined her on the red carpet in a black suit and tie with dark sunglasses. After the screening, he celebrated with the audience, giving Jolie and the cast a standing ovation.
