Pattern’s New At-Home Hair Steamer Shortens My Washdays

In the natural hair community, it’s well-known that applying heat while using a deep conditioner or hair mask enhances product absorption. However, when salon visits aren’t an option, many Black women turn to makeshift methods. These include wrapping conditioner-soaked curls in multiple layers of plastic to retain moisture or using a hot towel around the hair before covering it with a shower cap. While these techniques are resourceful, they often fall short. They are time-consuming and fail to provide adequate direct heat and moisture to effectively open the hair’s cuticle.

The launch of Pattern Beauty’s new handheld, at-home hair steamer has generated excitement among curl enthusiasts. “Just as we recommend moisturizing the skin right after a shower to capture the benefits of humidified air, the same principle applies to hair,” explains board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara. “Moisture combined with heat helps to open up the hair cuticle, allowing for better absorption of additional moisture. This is beneficial for the hair in the short term, and consistent hydration can lead to long-term improvements.”

Pattern aims to bring salon-quality steam treatments into the comfort of home. “You no longer need to put on a plastic cap with conditioner and sit for hours,” says Ni’Kita Durham-Wilson, the company’s vice president of product development. “Now, you can steam your hair in just 15 minutes, achieving deep penetration without the hassle. Washday doesn’t have to consume your entire day anymore.”

Eager to experience this innovation, I decided to try the Pattern Hair Steamer for myself.
