In school, we learned that ancient civilizations made the most of their resources, never wasting anything. This idea still applies today, even in a local hair salon.
Alysha Daroy, owner of Maria Madisson, a popular hair extension salon in Malibu, has embraced this principle. “Customers often notice my jar of used extensions. Once they learn its purpose, many bring in their old extensions when they come for new ones. One customer even brought a small suitcase full of hair!” Daroy said. “I’m happy to donate the hair for a good cause — it’s much better than throwing it away!”
Daroy explains that donating hair is simple. People can mail their hair to Matter of Trust, a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco. The organization repurposes hair discarded by pet groomers, veterinarians, and salons, as well as laundry lint. These materials are transformed into mats that help absorb petrochemical oil spills.
These mats have been used in various situations, including the 2021 Huntington Beach oil spill. They are effective in cleaning up oil spills in oceans, ports, airports, mining sites, and garages.
