Jenna Perry’s Hair Color Tips by Alexandra Engler, mbg Beauty Director

Jenna Perry, a prominent New York City-based hair colorist and owner of Jenna Perry Hair Studio, is currently at the forefront of hair color trends. Perry’s expertise has transformed the looks of celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Chloe Sevigny, and Jennifer Lawrence. She is known for popularizing natural-looking hair colors that blend effortlessly with her clients’ features.

Perry’s signature approach includes creating subtle, sun-kissed blondes, understated reddish-brunette auburns, and soft, dimensional brunettes. Despite facing skepticism early in her career—one manager even doubted her success because her clients looked so naturally beautiful after their appointments—Perry remained steadfast in her unique approach.

In a recent appearance on mindbodygreen’s beauty podcast Clean Beauty School, Perry shared her insights on hair color trends, damage prevention, and achieving her renowned natural look. Here are some of her key tips:

Gradual Color Transitions

For those looking to change their hair color without causing damage, Perry advises a gradual transition. This method is especially effective when returning to a more natural color. Perry suggests using highlights around the face and throughout the hair to create dimension while waiting for the original color to grow out. Once a desired base color is achieved, maintenance is minimal. “Once you have that beautiful base color, you can add nuanced highlights to enhance your features,” Perry explains. Clients can typically maintain their color with visits every six months.

Balayage Over Foil

To achieve a natural look with less damage, Perry recommends balayage over traditional foil techniques. Balayage, a freehand painting method, applies color in an open-air process, allowing for a more gradual and less aggressive lightening effect. Unlike foil, which traps heat and can be harsher on hair, balayage offers a gentler approach. Perry notes that while all coloring processes involve some damage, balayage is less invasive and more forgiving.

The Role of Bond-Building Products

Perry emphasizes the importance of bond-building products in maintaining hair health. These products work by reactivating and repairing the bonds in the hair cortex that are damaged by coloring, heat, and other stressors. Perry recommends using Olaplex, a leading bond builder that has become popular for its ability to restore hair integrity. “Bond builders are like hair insurance,” she says. They are suitable for anyone who uses hair color, styling tools, or is exposed to environmental damage. Perry asserts that everyone can benefit from these treatments to keep their hair healthy.
