A new survey has declared the 1980s as the most iconic decade for hairstyles, according to 2,000 American women. The poll, conducted by OnePoll for Hair Biology, highlights the ’80s as the top era for memorable hairdos, followed by the 1990s and 1970s.
Hairstyle Evolution and Challenges
Throughout the years, women’s relationships with their hair have been complex. The survey revealed that the average woman has experienced four major hair disasters, tried six different haircut styles, and experimented with four dye jobs. As women age, the most common changes they notice are increased dryness and overall damage, both cited by 41 percent of respondents. Additionally, 35 percent reported that their hair no longer holds styling as well as it once did, leading 28 percent to feel frustrated with their current hair condition.
Iconic Hairstyles and Celebrity Influences
Despite these challenges, certain hairstyles have stood the test of time. Farrah Fawcett’s feathered locks were voted the most iconic, followed by Shirley Temple’s curls, Marilyn Monroe’s platinum blonde hair, and Jennifer Aniston’s “The Rachel” from Friends.
Quarantine and Hair Appreciation
Interestingly, the COVID-19 pandemic has led many women to appreciate their natural hair more. Nearly 80 percent of respondents said they grew to love their hair during quarantine, with 85 percent expressing happiness about letting their hair go natural. Furthermore, 36 percent undertook a total “hair reset,” reverting to their natural color.
Embracing Aging and Hair Health
Improving hair health has become a priority for over half of the women surveyed. Many are also embracing their gray hairs, viewing each one as an achievement rather than a blemish. Overall, 57 percent of respondents have enjoyed their aging journey, and 68 percent prefer to embrace the aging process rather than conceal it.
This survey underscores the enduring influence of past decades on current hair trends and highlights a growing trend towards natural hair and self-acceptance.
