Renee Richards
Another trans woman who made history and paved the way for others following her is Renee Richards.
Though she rose to fame as a player in the male division of the United States Tennis Division, she battled furiously to be able to compete instead in the women’s division after coming out as a trans woman in the 70s.
After taking the USTA to court—in fact going as far as the Supreme Court!—she won her case and was allowed to play in the 1977 U.S. Open.
