Worlds Colliding in Japan
Kournikova and Iglesias found themselves all the way across the world in the same exact country, at the same exact time. A month after the music video shoot, Kournikova was competing in a tournament in Japan, and by chance, Iglesias was there, too, for a promo trip.
“I have no clue, but they kept in contact and they were calling each other. It’s like kids, calling each other at night. And you know, they started dating, as much as they could,” Fernando Giaccardi, Iglesias’s partner and client told VH1.
From Acting to Real Life
The “Escape” music video is about a girl lost for love, watching Enrique Iglesias perform on stage from the crowd, as they fall for each other. But while she might’ve been pretending to fall for him for their 2001 music video together, little did they know that only a year later, she would be watching him perform at the MTV Video Music Awards as his love interest in real life.
While the two kept their relationship on the down low for about a year, it was at this award ceremony in 2002 that they walked the red carpet together, and introduced themselves as a couple to the public.
