Sadly, Smith did not choose to come out on his own accord, but rather was outed by his fellow contestant Jeff Varner.
Smith later opened up about how he stayed strong in that situation, writing a moving piece for The Hollywood Reporter. “To adventure is to invite hazard into your life,” he wrote. “But you cannot control the hazards you face, be they repeated misfortune or the harmful actions of others. You can only control how you respond.”
