Hair today, gone tomorrow
Although it might seem strange today, long hair has, at times, been a very controversial thing. For a long time it was considered improper and un-masculine for men to have long hair. This viewpoint changed with the cultural revolution of the 60s, as old social traditions were thrown out the window and people embraced a greater sense of freedom in self-expression. The 60s musical ‘Hair’ focuses on this period of upheaval, with the long hair of the characters explicitly serving as a recurring motif of disobedience and freedom.
