Obviously, Olsson was going to eventually cut some of her hair—that’s the point of getting a haircut. But from the looks of things, the only possibility seemed to be to cut it unevenly. They had to cut anywhere that they could fit scissors among the densely matted knots. That way, they could get rid of the knots and work with what was left.

Olsson did not like this option either. “Cutting her hair was absolutely not an option for me. I knew right then and there that we had to keep as much hair as possible,” Olsson told BBC News.
