The story became a focus of national outrage. Thousands of supporters wrote letters to the mom and daughter to offer their consolations for such a “ridiculous” and “disgusting” decision from her father.
Schaffen was labeled as cruel, and others even described the haircut as abuse. There were no excuses for his decision to punish his daughter in such an extreme and barbaric manner. Schaffen was quite obviously an irresponsible father. Who would intentionally cause such deep emotional pain to their daughter? It was totally unnecessary and distressing.
