LACONIA — On Saturday, residents of the Lakes Region enjoyed free haircuts and other services as part of a community event held at Faith Alive Christian Fellowship church. Local hair stylists and barbers volunteered their time to offer free haircuts to children and others in need. A total of 75 people attended throughout the day, with 47 individuals receiving haircuts.
Lauren Mock, a hair stylist at Skintastically You and a booth renter at Moderno Barbershop in Tilton, expressed her excitement about the event. “I woke up bright and early, looking forward to today,” she said, highlighting her eagerness to give back to the community.
Samantha Scott attended with her two daughters and son, all of whom received haircuts. She explained that her children hadn’t had haircuts in over a year and a half, following the tragic death of their father in a car accident. As a single mother, Scott said it had been difficult to prioritize haircuts, and she was deeply grateful for the free service. “I was ecstatic,” she shared.
Mae Paonessa, a hair stylist at Shh it’s a Salon and the event’s organizer, expressed her hope that the initiative would have a positive impact. “I’m grateful for what I can do to give back,” Paonessa said. “The fact that my little small idea is something super special to someone else means the world to me.”
Six stylists and three barbers volunteered their time for the event, including four stylists from Jennifer’s Color Bar in Gilford. Salon owner Jennifer Fielders spoke highly of Paonessa’s efforts, acknowledging the challenges of organizing such an event. “It’s a lot to do to get it all set up, and I really appreciate her doing that this year,” Fielders said.
In addition to haircuts, attendees could enjoy free massages. Danielle Rivera, an independent massage therapist from Meredith, explained that massages are particularly beneficial during the holiday season. “Everybody feels relaxed and happy after a massage,” Rivera said, noting the stress and emotions that many people experience during the holidays.
While some attended for the haircuts, others came for the free burgers, hotdogs, and warmth. Many individuals experiencing homelessness took part in the event, benefiting from the food and the supportive environment.
Paonessa credited the success of the event to the collective effort of the volunteers. She thanked the stylists, barbers, and those who helped with setup and cleanup. She also expressed appreciation to the church for hosting the event.
Looking ahead, Paonessa is already planning for next year. She hopes to make the event an annual tradition and wants to expand it in the future. “Other stylists have reached out to volunteer next year,” she said, adding that she plans to include more child-friendly activities, such as inflatable houses. Paonessa also hopes to hold the event before Thanksgiving next year and encourages the community to stay tuned for updates.
“There will be something for the community to look forward to next year,” she said.
