Using Braids
Wet Braiding
Wash and Condition Your Hair
Start with clean, well-conditioned hair. Use a shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type. This will ensure that your hair is healthy and more receptive to styling. After washing, gently towel dry your hair to remove excess water.
Section the Hair
Divide your hair into several small sections. The number of sections will depend on the thickness and length of your hair. You can use clips to hold the sections that you’re not working on.
Braiding Technique
Take each section and braid it tightly. You can do simple three-strand braids, French braids, or Dutch braids. The tighter the braid, the more defined the curls will be. Make sure to braid all the way to the ends of the hair.
Drying
Let the braids dry naturally. This can take several hours, or you can sleep with the braids in overnight for more convenient styling. If you’re in a hurry, you can use a low heat setting on a hairdryer with a diffuser attachment to dry the braids more quickly. However, be careful not to use too much heat as it can reduce the effectiveness of the curls.
Unbraiding and Styling
Once the hair is completely dry, carefully unbraid each section. Do not brush your hair as this can disrupt the curl pattern. Instead, use your fingers to separate and fluff up the curls. You can apply a small amount of a curl-defining product like a mousse or a serum to enhance the curls and add shine.
Dry Braiding
Prepare the Hair
If you want to do dry braiding, start with dry hair that has been previously styled or left natural. You can spritz a little water on the hair to add some moisture and make it more pliable.
Section and Braid
Divide the hair into sections and braid as described in the wet braiding method. However, since the hair is dry, you may need to use a bit more effort to ensure the braids are tight and evenly done.
Heatless Styling Tools (Optional)
You can use heatless styling tools like foam rollers or flexi rods after braiding. Take the braided sections and wrap them around the rollers or rods. Secure them in place with clips or the provided attachments. Leave them in for a few hours or overnight for better results.
Unwrapping and Finishing
When you’re ready to take out the rollers or rods, gently unwrap the hair. As with wet braiding, use your fingers to style the curls and apply a curl-enhancing product if desired. This method can give you more voluminous and defined curls compared to just dry braiding alone.
Using Rollers
Foam Rollers
Section the Hair
Similar to other methods, start by sectioning your hair into small, manageable sections. Use clips to keep the sections separate.
Roll the Hair
Take a foam roller and start at the ends of a section of hair. Roll the hair up towards the roots, making sure to keep the tension even. You can roll the hair either in the same direction for all sections to create a uniform look or alternate directions for a more natural, tousled effect.
Secure the Rollers
Once the hair is rolled onto the foam rollers, secure them in place with clips. You can leave the rollers in for a few hours or overnight, depending on how much time you have and how tight you want the curls to be.
Removing the Rollers and Styling
When you remove the foam rollers, gently unroll the hair. Do not pull or tug on the curls. Use your fingers to separate and shape the curls. You can apply a light-hold hairspray or a curl-defining spray to set the curls and add shine.
Velcro Rollers
Prepping the Hair
Before using Velcro rollers, you can apply a small amount of a heat protectant or a curl-enhancing product to the hair. This helps to protect the hair and also gives the curls better definition.
Rolling the Hair
Take a Velcro roller and place it at the root of a section of hair. Roll the hair up around the roller, making sure that the ends are tucked in neatly. The Velcro rollers will adhere to the hair and hold it in place. Repeat this process for all the sections of hair.
Drying (Optional)
If you want to speed up the process, you can use a hairdryer on a low heat setting with a diffuser attachment. Hold the dryer about 6 – 8 inches away from the rollers and move it around gently to dry the hair. However, air drying also works well and is less likely to cause damage.
Unrolling and Styling
Once the hair is dry or you’ve decided to remove the rollers, carefully unroll them. Gently shake your head to loosen the curls and then use your fingers to style them. You can add a bit of hair oil or serum to smooth any flyaways and make the curls look more polished.
Using Chemical-Free Products
Curl-Forming Creams and Gels
Select the Right Product
Look for a curl-forming cream or gel that is suitable for your hair type. Some products are designed for fine hair, while others work better on thick or coarse hair. Read the product labels and reviews to find one that will give you the desired results.
Applying the Product
Start with damp hair. Squeeze a small amount of the product into your hands and rub them together to distribute it evenly. Then, starting from the roots, work the product through your hair, using your fingers to comb it through and shape the curls. You can scrunch your hair as you apply the product to enhance the curl formation.
Drying and Styling
Let your hair air dry naturally or use a diffuser attachment on a low heat setting with a hairdryer. As the hair dries, the curl-forming product will help define and hold the curls. Once the hair is dry, you can gently separate the curls with your fingers and apply a small amount of a hairspray or a finishing serum for added shine and hold.
Sea Salt Sprays
Preparing the Hair
Make sure your hair is clean and towel dried. You can also apply a small amount of a leave-in conditioner before using the sea salt spray to prevent the hair from drying out too much.
Applying the Spray
Shake the sea salt spray bottle well and then spray it evenly throughout your hair, focusing on the mid-lengths to the ends. You can scrunch your hair as you spray to help distribute the product and create a more textured look.
Drying and Styling
Let the hair air dry naturally for a more natural, beachy look. The sea salt in the spray will help create loose, wavy curls. Once the hair is dry, you can use your fingers to tousle the curls and add a bit of a texturizing wax or a light-hold hairspray to keep the style in place.
