Sakura Rabbit recently tested the new hair creation tools included in Unity 6, the latest update from Unity Technologies. Released earlier this month, Unity 6 is a highly anticipated upgrade to the popular game engine. It brings various improvements, including enhanced stability, faster rendering, advanced lighting options, robust multiplayer workflows, dynamic AI capabilities, and better support for mobile web runtimes.
A standout feature of this update is the innovative hair creation tools, which were first highlighted in the Time Ghost tech demo released a month prior. These tools allow developers to simulate and render hair as individual strands. They can also manage levels of detail (LOD) by rendering fewer, wider strands when viewed from a distance, making them suitable for large scenes.
Sakura Rabbit, a well-known developer, VFX artist, and Unity enthusiast, was among the first to explore these new features. She showcased a simulation that illustrates realistic interactions between a human hand and a short hairstyle. The hair reacts dynamically in real time as it is moved. Sakura has made the project files available on her Fanbox page, which can be accessed for a fee.
Additionally, Rob Cupisz, the Tech Lead for Unity’s Demo Team, provided insights into the character’s hair simulation and machine learning-driven cloth deformation featured in the Time Ghost cinematic. He also highlighted the interactive ECS grass in the environment that players can run through. A detailed breakdown of these features is available online.
