Ayanda Thabethe showcases a variety of hairstyles with ease. It’s rare to see her hair out of place unless she’s intentionally rocking a stylishly tousled look.
In a previous issue of TRUELOVE, Ayanda wrote a heartfelt letter to her hair, expressing her deep connection. Here’s an excerpt from her touching message:
“As my crown, you represent so much of who I am. I relied heavily on my mom to take care of you when I was younger. She would braid you, ensuring you always looked neat and cute. She treated you with love and care. I remember one time she was furious when I came home from school with lice because I had played in the sand during lunch break.
In high school, things were different. Attending a school for Black girls, I couldn’t grow you out. I had to keep my hair short until Grade 11. My mom would give me tidy haircuts, but sometimes they made me cringe! When I finally reached Grade 11 and could let you grow again, I was excited. My friends and I competed to see whose hair would grow the longest. You became a true beauty.
I’ve cared for you by avoiding harsh chemicals and being mindful of the products I use. I love that you’ve always been healthy and strong. Working in modeling has posed challenges—sometimes they’d apply dye and use excessive heat without concern. I would rush home to find ways to restore your health!
For two years, I embraced your natural state. I take pride in your African roots and your resilient curls. You remind me of who I am. I am now the ambassador for the best haircare brand in the world.
To you, my beautiful hair, continue to grow and shine. The whole world is watching—we’re global, baby!”
