The Duke of Sussex recently shared a heartwarming detail about his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. He revealed that they have been “blessed” with their mother Meghan Markle’s long and thick hair.
In the latest issue of HELLO!, chief content officer Sophie Vokes-Dudgeon recounts her meeting with Harry at last month’s WellChild Awards. Harry, 40, is the patron of this children’s charity and has attended the annual awards for many years. HELLO! has been a long-time media partner of the event. Sophie expressed her admiration for Harry, noting that the WellChild Awards hold special significance for him. She remarked, “From the moment he arrived in the reception room, he had an infectious energy. There were no airs and graces at all as he chatted animatedly about his own children ahead of the event.”
Harry told Sophie that Archie and Lilibet have inherited their mother’s thick hair. He expressed amazement at how quickly Lilibet would soon be able to sit on her hair. He also shared that he was enjoying turning 40, having been told by friends that it is the best decade.
Harry joked about Meghan managing their busy household, saying she was juggling their two children, three dogs, and even some chickens, which he humorously mentioned were not quite house-trained.
Sophie described Harry as being “in his element” at the event. She highlighted that he finds great joy in spending time with children and the parents and professionals honored at the awards. Royal editor Emily Nash, who accompanies Harry each year, noted how moving it is to see him interact with the kids. She observed that he often gets down on his knees to play, laughing and joking with them. This connection has deepened for Harry since becoming a father himself.
While Archie and Lilibet are rarely seen in public, they have made brief appearances in their parents’ Netflix documentary and on previous Christmas cards. Their striking red hair has been evident, with Archie’s hair evolving from a bright red to a darker auburn over the years, while Lilibet can appear almost blonde in certain lighting. Harry has previously discussed his children’s “ginger genes.”
During an interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he remarked, “The Spencer gene is very, very strong. I genuinely thought at the beginning of my relationship with Meghan that if we had kids, there was no way the ginger gene would stand up to my wife’s genes, but I was wrong!”
All three of Princess Diana’s siblings—Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and Earl Spencer—also have naturally vibrant red hair, a trait passed down to Harry.
