As September marks Alopecia Awareness Month, Caprice Cannon, the owner of Devine Beauty Studio in San Jose, is shedding light on the experiences of those living with alopecia.
Cannon takes great care in crafting wigs and extensions, pouring her passion and precision into each piece. “I get excited because I know I’m going to help somebody out today. I want to make their day better and help them feel more beautiful,” she said about her work with clients.
For Cannon, creating and customizing wigs is more than just a job; it is an art form and a labor of love. She specializes in assisting women with various hair conditions, particularly those suffering from alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that results in hair loss. “This wig is for a client who has alopecia. She doesn’t have any hair, so it is custom-fitted for her head,” she explained.
According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, around 700,000 people in the U.S. live with some form of alopecia.
While Cannon enjoys serving her diverse clientele, she believes that the true essence of “divine beauty” is that every woman holds inherent value, whether or not she has hair.
This message resonates with Aziza Shuler, a CBS News Philadelphia anchor, who recently shared her own journey with alopecia. “For almost 15 years, I wore wigs, hairpieces, and extensions to cover my alopecia because I was ashamed and felt burdened,” Shuler recalled.
However, embracing her baldness brought Shuler a new sense of freedom. “Once I lost the fear and shame associated with it, I realized, ‘OK, I’m ready to do this,'” she said.
Shuler emphasizes that beauty standards are personal. “Do what makes you feel confident. Do what makes you feel beautiful,” she advised.
Cannon supports this message, adding, “You have to do the self-work to be happy on the inside and feel that you’re beautiful inside.”
As clients leave Devine Beauty Studio, Cannon hopes they remember that true “divine beauty” begins within.
