Young Wicklow Resident’s Heartfelt Hair Donation Sparks Hope for Cancer Patients

by Barbara

In an inspiring act of kindness, Aoibhinn Kenny, a compassionate nine-year-old from Arklow, is set to part with over 14 inches of her luscious locks, dedicating them to the Rapunzel Foundation. This noble gesture is part of the ‘Lock of Love’ fundraiser for Arklow Cancer Support.

Aoibhinn’s decision to embark on this altruistic journey was deeply influenced by her aunt’s battle with breast cancer in 2019, a time when the world was grappling with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unable to visit her aunt during the tough times of treatment, Aoibhinn decided to grow her hair to support Arklow Cancer Support, an organization that provided crucial assistance to her aunt during her illness.

With her family deeply involved in the cause, including her grandmother Adrienne Kenny, who serves as a founding member and treasurer of Arklow Cancer Support, and her beloved grandfather Denis Kenny, renowned for his dedicated service with the Arklow Fire Brigade, Aoibhinn’s commitment to fundraising and volunteering is undoubtedly rooted in her family’s legacy.

Speaking about her motivation, Aoibhinn shared, “My grandfather was a brave special hero, my Superman. He dedicated 30 years to being a firefighter, keeping Arklow safe. He was so special to me, and I miss his hugs, kisses, and cheeky smile. He fought hard against cancer, and this fundraiser is my way of honoring his memory.”

The funds raised through Aoibhinn’s heartfelt endeavor will be instrumental in the battle against cancer, a formidable adversary that has touched the lives of those she holds dear.

Aoibhinn’s mother, Jenny, expressed her pride in her daughter’s dedication to the cause, saying, “Aoibhinn’s inspiration for this fundraiser came from her aunt’s struggle with cancer, particularly when she lost her hair during treatment. With her grandfather’s recent passing due to cancer in July, this cause has become even more meaningful to our family. Aoibhinn has been growing her hair for four years, and we can’t wait to see it cut – it’s a truly heartwarming gesture.”

The 14-inch mane that Aoibhinn will part with will be sent to the Rapunzel Foundation, a charity that creates suction wigs for children and adults suffering from alopecia.

A specific date for the haircutting ceremony will be decided upon as the fundraising goal draws nearer. In a touching tribute to her grandfather’s legacy with the Arklow Fire Brigade, the family plans to involve firefighters in the event.

Mary O’Brien, Director of Services and founder of Arklow Cancer Support, expressed her admiration for Aoibhinn’s maturity and generosity, stating, “It’s a fantastic gesture by Aoibhinn and shows a maturity far beyond her years. Please help by supporting Aoibhinn, who will be donating her hair and raising vital funds for Arklow Cancer Support, so that we can continue providing services and support for those in need in our community.”
